The Awesome Way James Gunn Congratulated Deadpool 2s Success

Deadpool 2 arrived in theaters this weekend, and although the weekend isn't even over yet, the Merc with a Mouth is already a huge success. Deadpool 2 broke the record for Thursday night preview screenings for an R-rated movie, and is poised for a huge opening weekend of around $130+ million domestic and $175-$200 million worldwide. Reviews are positive and the R-rated superhero is receiving all kinds of praise, including from another corner of the superhero universe. Guardians of the Galaxy director and one of the creative pillars of the MCU, James Gunn, offered his congratulations to Deadpool 2 in an awesome way. Take a look:

As if baby Groot wasn't already cute enough, James Gunn delivers baby Groot cosplaying as Deadpool. Melding the two fan favorite characters is fun and totally works. They could probably sell toys of this and make a pretty penny. They could call them Grootpool, or DeadGroot. Then again, it may be too soon on that one. You could see Groot being a fan of the Merc with a Mouth too, given his rebellious attitude and teenage cursing in Avengers: Infinity War. This Twitter post is such a creative way to congratulate the cast and crew of Deadpool 2 versus just a couple of kind words.

It is also cool to see this sort of kudos given between those who operate in different comic book universes. While fandoms of different comic book universes feel the need to pit themselves against one another, the creatives realize that a rising tide lifts all boats and if audiences are having a good time at superhero movies and they are making money. That's good for everyone as we all want more Deadpool and Guardians in the future.

You can see why James Gunn would be a fan of Deadpool too. Like Deadpool, the Guardians of the Galaxy have a bit of irreverence to them and they are weirder characters that largely operate separately from the rest of their cinematic universe counterparts. Who would have thought a decade ago that some of the superheroes with the biggest on screen successes and cultural cachet would be a misfit band of aliens including a raccoon that's not a raccoon and a talking tree along with an obscene. Or even more so, a fourth-wall breaking B-list X-Man. There is something cool about that and the chances these films are willing to take and the willingness of audiences to accept them.

First Once Upon A Deadpool Trailer Puts Fred Savage In His Princess Bride Bedroom

From the moment we heard that we were getting a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2 we've all had the same question. Just what in the hell would that even look like? Now, with the first trailer for Once Upon A Deadpool, we know. It turns out it looks fucking funny. Sorry, PG-13. It looks really freaking hilarious. It turns out Deadpool and Fred Savage make a great comedy team together. Who knew? Check out the trailer below.

We don't actually see much of Deadpool 2 in the trailer, which is fine as most of us are pretty familiar with it at this point. Instead, we're treated to the Princess Bride style framing device which sees Deadpool kidnap an adult Fred Savage in order to subject him to the more family-friendly version of the story. It actually works out well for Savage, as he has the best line in the trailer, comparing Fox produced Marvel movies to Beatles music produced by Nickelback. Good news, being PG-13 doesn't mean the movie is going to be any less brutal.

This actually looks really funny. Even if you saw Deadpool 2 in theaters and own the Super Duper Cut on Blu-ray, there might still be enough of a reason to hit the theater again to check out Once Upon a Deadpool. While it's hard to say just how much of the movie will be different, with additional material like the Deadpool/Fred Savage scenes we see here, it's quite possible that Deadpool's narration, which makes up a large part of the film, could be entirely different. The movie always saw Deadpool telling us a story, but not quite like this.

And the Princess Bride themed framing is perfect. Not only is Fred Savage "kidnapped" here, but he's forced to wear the same clothes that he did as a kid when he was being told a story by Peter Falk back in the 80s.

For a certain segment of the audience, that grew up with The Princess Bride, which now hold enough to have seen the R-rated version of Deadpool 2, this could be extra funny.

Seeing a movie get re-cut in order to hit a specific rating isn't all that unusual. It's just that normally we see movies that get hit with NC-17 rating getting recut down to an R-rating because most theaters won't show NC-17 films. Seeing an R-rated movie recut down to PG-13 is far more unusual.

It's also that much funnier because when it comes to Deadpool that R-rating was seen as being so important. When the first film was being made it was felt by so many fans that if the movie was made PG-13, like most superhero movies, that something intrinsic to the character would be lost. Now, the fact that the movie is rated PG-13 is the entire selling point.

Does Deadpool need to be rated-R? I suppose we'll find out on December 12 when Once Upon a Deadpool hits theaters to bring us all a little holiday cheer.

Last night was the 2019 Academy Awards, wrapping up this year's Awards Season and celebrating the best and brightest the film industry has to offer. Aside from the musical performances and acceptance speeches, there are usually a handful of moments where celebrities go viral due to their reactions during the ceremony. There were quite a few to choose from, from both the Oscars proper and the red carpet coverage that preceded the event on ABC.

One of the most viral figures to come from the 2019 Oscars is American Idol alum and singer/actress Jennifer Hudson. Hudson was invited to sing "I'll Fight" from the documentary RBG, which was one of the tracks nominated for Best Original Song this year. While her performance may have hit a few sour notes, J Hud's most publicized moment from the Oscars came from reacting to Lady Gaga's acceptance speech for "Shallow." Just check it out below.

The Big Changes Made To Thoroughbreds As It Was Developed

The new dark comedy Thoroughbreds marks the directorial debut of newcomer Cory Finley -- but a surprising fact about the film is that the original idea that inspired it couldn't have been more different than the final product coming to theaters. Not only was it initially developed for a completely different medium, but the first draft of the script had only extremely vague similarities to the story that is ultimately told. Recently speaking with Finley, he told me,

It changed a lot, and it's sort of a multi-part question, because it started as a play. And the play changed drastically from its first draft to the last - and the first draft was like unrecognizable. There was some stuff about a horse, and it was set in Connecticut, but other than that it was like about a middle-aged woman. It was a completely unrecognizable play. There was a character in that early draft who was named Lily, who was kind of a predecessor Anya's character. And I just decided to kind of rebuild the story around her, and it started to really come into its own when I did.

This bit about the evolution of Thoroughbreds came right at the start of my interview with Cory Finley, who I spoke with as part of the movie's Los Angeles press day. I always love to ask filmmakers about the differences between first drafts and final cuts, curious about the movie we didn't see, but Finley offered a story much more extreme than the ones I usually hear. It seems that the project always had the same title, given that a horse was always involved, but it was really only a fraction of the original approach that is featured in the actual film.

Anya Taylor-Joy and Olivia Cooke play Lily and Amanda in Thoroughbreds -- two teens from wealthy families living in Connecticut who used to be friends but grew apart as they got older. Following a brutal incident involving a horse, Amanda has become a total outcast, but reconnects with Lily when her mother arranges tutoring sessions. It's a strange reunion, particularly because Amanda has recently become in-touch with the fact that she has no emotions, but they are able to bond through their hatred of Mark (Paul Sparks), Lily's emotionally abusive step-father... and before long begin hatching a plan to kill him. It's a complex and wicked plot -- but apparently none of it was featured in the original version of Cory Finley's script.

Further discussing the development of the Thoroughbreds screenplay, Finley added that the focus on Lily led him towards a completely different narrative, eventually introducing the entire supporting cast of the feature. That sounds like a lot of work, but apparently the filmmaker had a lot of fun with the exploration and evolution. He told me,

Then I did have a pretty complete version of kind of the character and the core of who they were and their relationship, and its ups and downs by the time I turned it into a screenplay - but there was a lot of expansion as far as sort of building out to their particular plotting and all the characters that they kind of pulled into. So changed pretty immensely, and I love that.
