Film Academy Responds To Backlash Over Moving Categories To Commercials

In the latest controversy surrounding the upcoming Academy Awards, it was announced that the awards for Best Cinematography, Makeup and Hairstyling, Film Editing and Live-Action Short would be presented during the commercial breaks and not on the live broadcast this year. This was met with major backlash from the industry. Now the Academy has responded to the backlash and attempted to address concerns in a letter to its membership. It reads in part:

As the Academys officers, wed like to assure you that no award category at the 91st Oscars ceremony will be presented in a manner that depicts the achievements of its nominees and winners as less than any others. Unfortunately, as the result of inaccurate reporting and social media posts, there has been a chain of misinformation that has understandably upset many Academy members.

In response to the outrage over the reported changes to this years ceremony, this letter from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences board of governors attempts to set the record straight. To assuage the concerns of Academy members, the letter assures everyone that contrary to the narrative that is out there, no category will be disrespected or represented in any way as less than any other category.

The board of governors talks about inaccurate reporting and social media posts regarding the changes to this years ceremony presumably because the headline-grabbing change is that categories like Best Cinematography and Best Editing will be presented during commercial breaks. That has perhaps led some to the upsetting assumption that these categories will not be seen at all during the broadcast and are thus being disrespected for other, more flashy categories.

The Academy attempts to clarify this and any other misconceptions about this years ceremony elsewhere in the letter, as reported by Variety. It states that all 24 categories will be presented at the Dolby Theatre and shown on the broadcast. The difference is that the awards for Best Cinematography, Makeup and Hairstyling, Film Editing and Live-Action Short will not be presented live on the broadcast.

Instead these awards, including the speeches from the winners, will be recorded during the commercial breaks and air later in the broadcast, with time consuming elements like the walk to and from the stage edited out. The branches for these categories volunteered for this position. The letter also notes that in the future, four to six categories will be selected for this position and these four will be exempt next year.

So everyone will see the awards and speeches for these four categories, it just wont be live for those watching at home on ABC. That should come as some comfort to those who thought that categories vital to cinema like cinematography and editing wouldnt be seen at all. However, whether or not this will reduce the backlash will depend on if people believe that by not presenting these awards live, the Academy is casting them in a light that makes them seem less important than the others.

This is just one of the various controversies that have dogged this years Oscar ceremony. From the Best Popular Film category introduction, backlash and delay to the issues that ultimately led to this years ceremony being hostless, to the reversal on not having performances for all of the Best Original Song nominees, the Academy must be longing for the days when the La La Land/Moonlight Best Picture snafu was the biggest headache to deal with.

At this point in his career, Robert Rodriguez is hardly a newbie. It was nearly 30 years ago that he directed his first feature, 1992's El Mariachi, and he's made close to 20 features in that time. He is most definitely regarded as a veteran in the filmmaker community - but apparently that status did absolutely nothing to stop him from constantly looking to the legendary James Cameron in the making of Alita: Battle Angel:

Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron had the opportunity to work together closely in the making of Alita: Battle Angel, as the former directed a script written by the latter, and clearly Rodriguez truly loved the time they spent together, and the wisdom he gleaned. It was a subject he discussed with apparent enthusiasm during a recent interview with Indiewire.

Being a significant part of the 1990s indie director movement, Robert Rodriguez has a number of titles on his resume that are beloved by certain cinephiles, including Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, and Grindhouse, but there's also no real arguing that James Cameron operates on a different level. You can't even properly list the game-changing titles on the man's resume because it gets too unwieldy in text and you have to make controversial omissions.

I think it's safe to say that any of us put in Robert Rodriguez's position would treat James Cameron's eminence the same way, and one extra benefit is that Rodriguez made an effort to permanently capture the pearls of wisdom Cameron had to offer:

So I just have it on record. I turn my phone recorder on, because its like some of this will go right over my head and Im going have to go back and study it. Hes so freaking brilliant.

It seems like the collaboration will be one that Robert Rodriguez will long cherish - and there's still a lingering question mark regarding whether or not he will get the chance to work alongside James Cameron again. Following pessimistic early box office prognostications, Alita: Battle Angel has turned into an impressive hit, to date making $360.3 million worldwide (though only $74.7 million comes from domestic grosses). At this point we're still waiting to see if there will be an opportunity for the project to produce a sequel, but the possibility definitely exists.

Even if Robert Rodriguez and James Cameron never get to work together again, though, at the very least it sounds like Rodriguez made the most from the time.

Avengers: Endgame Already Has A Disney+ Release Date

Its been nearly two full weeks since Avengers: Endgame started playing in theaters, and its not leaving the silver screen anytime soon. Still, there are surely a lot of people looking forward to watching Endgame in the comfort of their own home. So when will they be able to do so? While a Blu-ray/DVD/Digital HD release release date hasnt been announced yet, the movie will hit Disney+ at the end of the year.

Disney+ is launching on November 12, a little over two years after the Mouse House announced it getting in on the streaming game. There will be a lot of content available from the get-go, and while Avengers: Endgame wont be part of that select group, Disney did announce today that it will throw the final chapter of the Infinity Saga onto its digital platform on December 11.

So thats just a month after Disney+ is made available in the United States, and just like every other Marvel, Star Wars and any other kind of movie that hails from Disney, Disney+ will be Avengers: Endgames exclusive streaming home. It joins fellow MCU entry Captain Marvel, which was announced to be the first theatrically-released Disney movie to stream exclusively on Disney+.

To reiterate, Disney and Marvel have not announced when Avengers: Endgames home release will be, but going off the typical release date pattern for movies nowadays, I suspect it will be available digitally in mid-to-late July, and the Blu-ray/DVD copies will follow in August. So if youd rather not buy a copy of Endgame, but do plan on subscribing to Disney+, itll be another four-five month-long wait to watch it on there.

Given how incredibly popular Avengers: Endgame has been, both critically and commercially, its a good bet that it will be a popular choice on Disney+. And whether you watch it on Disney+ or elsewhere, at over three hours long and containing numerous tributes to the Marvel Cinematic Universes history, Endgame is definitely a movie thats worth watching with a pause button available, as theres a lot to look out for.

Disney+ will also be a prime destination to explore the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame. While the Loki series is reportedly set in the past, with the Asgardian God of Mischief influencing events in human history, WandaVision and Falcon and Winter Soldier will be set post-Endgame. There is also a Hawkeye series reportedly in development, as well as a confirmed What If? animated series on the way.

How Much Solo: A Star Wars Story Should Make Over The 4-Day Weekend

Memorial Day is often a weird weekend at the box office. Although big budget movies are often released for Memorial Day weekend, it's not a moviegoing weekend like say, Thanksgiving or Christmas are in the States. However, bigger budget movies will often try to take advantage of the four-day weekend, which is what Solo: A Star Wars Story did this year. Still, the movie hasn't lived up to box office expectations so far, and while it looks like it will make up some ground on Monday, Solo: A Star Wars Story won't be breaking any box office records this weekend.

As of yesterday, we learned that Solo: A Star Wars Story was estimated to make $83 million dollars in North America through Sunday. Now, we know the movie actually made $84.7 million domestically through Sunday, and estimates for today indicate the movie will bring in an additional $18+ million, bring the domestic total for Solo: A Star Wars Story to $103 million or so by tomorrow. The numbers aren't enough to edge Solo forward to a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend, as estimates had initially projected, nor will it be enough for Solo: A Star Wars Story to beat any of the other recent Star Wars films at the box office.

So far, Solo: A Star Wars Story has had the lowest opening weekend when compared to Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million domestically), Rogue One ($155 million domestically), and Star Wars: The Last Jedi ($220 million domestically). Initial estimates had Solo: A Star Wars Story making $170 million domestically, which would have bumped it ahead of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Closer to release, those estimating indicated the movie would probably make less during opening weekend, but even those estimates had the movie making between $130 and $150 million domestically.

Following Solo's $14 million opening night, the movie seemed off to a somewhat successful start, but if the $103 million Variety is noting ends up being the final total domestically, and we add that to the $65 million the movie made outside of North America this weekend, the narrative in the coming weeks might be about whether or not Solo: A Star Wars Story goes on to make money. With a reported budget of $250 million, plus whatever advertising the movie cost, the movie still needs to get more butts into seats to start seeing a profit.

On the bright side, that's still the best Memorial Day weekend intake since 2014. Plus, in the coming weeks, the Han Solo adventure could go on to make up ground. The movie has an A- Cinemascore, and people going to see Ron Howard's Star Wars movie generally have seemed to have had a fun time doing so. While Solo might be heavy for young kids, there's not another more family-oriented film hitting theaters until Incredibles 2 hits theaters on June 15. Summer is also kicking off soon for most families, and we could see people turn to Solo: A Star Wars Story as a leisure activity in the coming weeks. Still, there's no doubt that Disney was hoping for better numbers for the Star Wars flick, especially coming off of the success of Avengers: Infinity War.
