Dog Days Actually Cast All Of Its Canine Characters Before Any Of The Humans
In case you couldn't tell by the title, dogs are a pretty crucial part of the new movie Dog Days. The movie weaves together five different stories set in Los Angeles, and one key thing all of them have in common is a special four-legged friend. This obviously made it very important for the production to find the best of the best when it came to animal talent -- and director Ken Marino recently told me that they were so key that they came on-board before any of the human stars:
I met some animal trainers, dog trainers, and we hired this guy, Mark Gordon, and he was great! And I said, 'Who you are your rock stars? Who are the dogs you're like, 'There's something special about this dog.' And so he immediately showed me a picture of the dog that plays Charlie, whose name I'm forgetting right now, but a great dog - the Goldendoodle. He was just quirky and weird and funny and awkward, and perfect. So I was like, 'Well, tell me the things that he does, and we'll write towards that.' And then we sort of started casting around that dog. The dogs were actually cast before the human actors were cast.
Dog Days held its domestic press junket this past week in Los Angeles, and it was during my sit down with Ken Marino that I learned about the unique casting strategy that the romantic comedy took collecting its ensemble. Evidently the film found it necessary to not only prioritize getting the dogs before bringing in the humans, but they even had an important impact on the script -- as their special abilities wound up dictating what they would ultimately be doing in the story.
The dog Ken Marino singles out, Charlie, is the one that is paired with Adam Pally's character, Dax, in the film. Dax is a lazy, irresponsible layabout, and he finds his lifestyle upended when his sister (Jessica St. Clair) and her husband (Thomas Lennon) have twins and need him to take care of their pet. It's a problematic situation because Dax lives in a building with a "no animals" policy, but also because Charlie is the kind of dog who does what he wants when he wants to: he'll flop right on top of Dax at a random moment, take forever on walks sniffing things, and wake him up early in the morning. It's definitely a part that requires a trained animal, and the dog that plays Charlie does a wonderful job.
You can watch Ken Marino talk about the process of casting the dogs of Dog Days by clicking play on the video below:
In addition to its collection of canine actors, Dog Days stars Nina Dobrev, Tone Bell, Adam Pally, Vanessa Hudgens, Jon Bass, Ron Cephas Jones, Finn Wolfhard, Eva Longoria, Rob Corddry, Tig Notaro, and more, and arrives in theaters this weekend.

Nanami also holds the distinction of being the only character to challenge and fend off Brioche, who was known as the strongest character in the entire series, in a one-on-one fight on near-equal terms for almost the entirety of the battle before being defeated, which clearly showcases her martial arts and athletic superiority over Cinque. Hugh Jackman Reveals Greatest Showman Happened Because He Hosted The Oscars
While the search is still on for the 2019 Oscars host, Hugh Jackman revealed in a recent interview that he enjoyed the gig and would consider doing it again. After all, hosting the Oscars is what directly led the actor to get involved with the project that would eventually become The Greatest Showman. Per Jackman:
Yeah, yeah 2009. I would do it again. They inquired about me doing it again a couple of times but I was working. [It was with Bill Condon] and Larry Mark. And actually it was after that that Larry Mark said, 'We should really do a movie musical.' He said, 'Why don't we do P.T. Barnum?' And I was like, 'OK.' That's how long ago that was! I didn't know it would take us nine years, eight years.
We've known since The Greatest Showman started doing press over a year ago that the popular movie musical was a long time in the making. People involved with the production have talked over and over again about the process of putting the movie together, with director Michael Gracey even telling CinemaBlend that the process took way longer once a script was produced and it was determined it would be better off as a musical.
So I read the script, and I kept going back to it and saying, 'Look, if you're going to put The Greatest Showman above your head on the poster, then you should really play to your strengths.' And I grew up watching him in Australia doing musicals. So I said, 'It should really be a musical.' And that really nave remark cost me seven years of my life.
Speaking to Deadline's The Actor's Side, Hugh Jackman also revealed he would be interested in hosting the Oscars again, although he has been busy when asked to repeat the experience previously. That's an interesting wrinkle, considering it hasn't been super popular for anyone in Hollywood to admit they actually enjoyed or would consider hosting the Oscars in recent weeks.
After Kevin Hart stepped down from hosting the Oscars thanks to some old Tweets resurfacing, the likes of Oprah, Steve Harvey and even Sandra Bullock have talked about how thankless the gig is.
Regardless, Hugh Jackman seems to be a tryer and beyond that, he's generally amiable about most projects he's asked about. So, it's not a huge shock that he'd be positive about his 2009 experience.
In the meantime, however, he's pretty busy. Hugh Jackman actually announced a one-man show that's going to incorporate music from The Greatest Showman, Les Miserables and more. Not bad for a project that started out as a dream stemming from an Oscars gig.
The Academy Awards this year will air on February 24, 2019 at 8 p.m. ET. For the latest movies, take a look at our movie premiere schedule.

The Star Wars Cast Is Counting Down The Days To The Release Of Episode IX
There are some days that you just have to count down towards: wedding days, holidays, and if you're a movie fan, the days to the next installment of your favorite series. So it's only natural that some have started marking the days until Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters, and this time around, it's not just the fans that are excited. As you'll see below, Mark Hamill himself is one of the many who are interested to see how things turn out after Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and he revealed on Twitter:
It's definitely interesting to think about just why Hamill would be counting down to the film, considering the events and fallout surrounding Star Wars: The Last Jedi. No matter his reasons, you have to admit, it's kind of adorable to see someone who's been part of this franchise since the beginning maintaining a sense of joy about it. Though part of that joy might be the fact that J.J. Abrams is back to co-write and direct this last film in the current trilogy.
The folks behind Star Wars: Episode IX could definitely use this sort of hype, as Solo: A Star Wars Story landed with a thud this summer, showing that even this IP has its limitations. Not to mention, there's the fact that mentioning Star Wars: The Last Jedi in the wrong company is bound to land you an earful. So turning ones thoughts to the more anticipatory side of the scale is definitely a welcome change from what has been raging through the fandom since last December.
It seems like the hype engines for Star Wars' latest film are about to kick into hyperdrive any day now, especially with frequent J.J. Abrams collaborator Keri Russell recently announced for an "action heavy" role in the film. That sort of announcement feels like a teaser for an eventual floodgate's worth of follow-ups that are bound to lead straight to Star Wars: Episode IX's publicity campaign. But there's also joy in the unknown, as the fandom is left to theorize about Russell and the contents of Episode IX. Even Mark Hamill and his co-stars are probably wondering, possibly marveling over whomever Russell is attached to in the current draft.
Speaking of co-stars, it's not just Hamill's Twitter feed that's hyping Star Wars: Episode IX, as John Boyega has taken to his own Instagram to share the same enthusiastic countdown.
With about a year and a half until Star Wars: Episode IX's release, there's going to be a lot of people joining in on the big countdown. The folks behind the planned big screen adaptations of Wicked and Death on the Nile (which will competing with Episode IX at the box office) probably feel like it's a good idea not to rush into anything at this moment. We'll see if they react or possibly reschedule, as the December 20, 2019 release date ticks down. In the meantime, you can take a look at the release calendar for the rest of 2018, and see if anything can even come close to the anticipation you may have for Star Wars: Episode IX.

Chris Pine Teases How Steve Trevor Will Be Different In Wonder Woman 1984
Wonder Woman 1984 has been pushed back to June 2020, despite already having gone into production. Due to it being a while before we get the DC sequel, we really haven't heard a lot about the upcoming movie beyond the basic facts. Recently, Wonder Woman 1984 actor Chris Pine teased a bit more about what is to come for Steve Trevor, noting,
This one is a little different for me tonally. The tables are turned, and I'm more of the deer in the headlights.
We've known for a while that production on Wonder Woman 1984 happened mostly in London (with stops in D.C. and Spain), and speaking to Variety, both Patty Jenkins and Chris Pine seemed keen to talk about filming and not what is actually going on with the Wonder Woman 1984 plot. However, Pine did touch on the fact that his character will be a little bit different this time around--likely all we are going to get until a trailer drops for the highly anticipated flick.
Sure, he's still being cagey, but I'll take what I can get.
Obviously, the big question everyone has is: How does Steve Trevor return from the dead? Patty Jenkins shared a photo months ago that featured the caption "Welcome to Wonder Woman 1984, Steve Trevor! #ww84" seemingly indicating the character we see in the sequel will be very much the character we met in the original Wonder Woman movie.
In addition, we know Steve Trevor isn't going to be a part of the movie in flashback memories, because in the image Patty Jenkins shared, Steve Trevor is in a mall and wearing clothing from the 1980s. See it, below.
There are plenty of ways for movies and TV shows to bring back dead characters and DC lore adds even potential ideas. There are options beyond actually resurrecting Steve Trevor, including dream sequences or hallucinations. There are comic book-y options like the fact Steve Trevor could really be another character in disguise or time travel could be involved. There are also options specific to Wonder Woman, like her saving Steve Trevor from Hades as an example. We'll have to wait to see how Steve Trevor factors into the plot.
Suffice to say, if you can bring Superman back from the dead, it should be nothing to bring back Steve Trevor. Although I feel it's relevant to note the fan-favorite character's death, to me, is part of what made Wonder Woman so special in the first place.
We'll have to wait and see if the DC movie is able to bring Steve Trevor back in a way that feels naturally, but also earned. Given Chris Pine has said he knew Steve Trevor would be back while filming his ultimate death scene in Wonder Woman, I'm hoping the plan Patty Jenkins and co. came up with is a sound one.
We'll find out in 2020. Be sure to see what DC and Warner Bros. have cooking before then with our full guide.
