A Behind-The-Scenes Look At Deadpool 2'sX-Force, Thanks To Our Buddy, Peter

When forming a superhero team, you want to be sure that each member has their unique set of powers/special abilities so that they can pull their weight in battle. For the most part, that's not an issue for the X-Force in Deadpool 2, but in keeping with his trollish personality, Wade Wilson has also added Peter (played by Rob Delaney) to the team, who's not a superhuman or any kind of costumed crimefighter. He's just a normal guy with a cheerful demeanor. It will be fun (and undoubtedly hilarious) to see how Peter fares when the X-Force is thrown into combat during Deadpool 2, but in the meantime, we've continued following Peter's A+ Twitter account, and today he dropped a cool behind-the-scenes photo of his teammates.

Peter may be a great fighter like the rest of the X-Force, but at least he brought his Nikon camera with him to chronicle his time with the team. In the above photo, we see Domino (Zazie Beetz), Bedlam (Terry Crews), Shatterstar (Lewis Tan) and Zeitgeist (Bill Skarsgard) together for their first day of training, and Peter is clearly fond of all of them. Judging by his Twitter account, the most exciting thing Peter does regularly is beekeeping, so to be able to hang out with superheroes and tag along as they go on an adventure is a big deal for him. Fingers crossed that he isn't immediately blown to pieces upon dropping into the battlefield during Deadpool 2, but in case he is, at least we'll have his social media contributions to remember him by.

Wade Wilson will bring the X-Force together in Deadpool 2 to help him protect a young mutant named Russell who's been targeted by the time-traveling Cable. Along with the X-Force operatives, Shioli Kutsana is playing a still-to-be-identified mutant, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus will be back for another round of superheroics. The X-Force has been part of the Marvel Comics universe since the early 1990s, so to see the team finally being realized in live action as this film franchise closes in on two decades is great. Better yet, this is just the beginning of the X-Force on the big screen, as an X-Force movie is in development, with Drew Goddard attached to write and direct. There's no word yet on if Peter will be back for that movie, but assuming he survives Deadpool 2's craziness, maybe he'll be stung by a genetically-altered bee and get to buzz around with powers in the future.

One Key Last Jedi Moment Seems To Have Been Inspired By Empire Strikes Back

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Wars: The Last Jedi are ahead!

While Star Wars: The Last Jedi is about letting the past die, Rian Johnson actually used a lot of inspiration from the franchise's venerated past to inform his film. Whatever your thoughts on where he took the franchise, it is clear that the writer/director is a fan and true student of Star Wars, and now we have more proof of that. In one of The Last Jedi's more emotional scenes, Rose saves Finn from a suicide mission and talks about how victory will come from saving what we love versus fighting what we hate. Well, it turns out that sentiment may have actually been inspired by the words of The Empire Strikes Back director Irvin Kershner. You can see the evidence, below.

The text that IGN reporter Scott Collura is citing on his Twitter page is from the 1980 book Once Upon A Galaxy: The Making of the Empire Strikes Back by Alan Arno. In it, Arno interviewed Irvin Kershner, whose sentiments about the difference between the Rebels and the Empire certainly seem similar to those spoken by Rose in The Last Jedi. This is a good catch by Scott Collura, but it has to just be coincidence, right? A case of parallel thinking? After all, this wasn't in Empire itself, but in a book from decades ago featuring an interview with Kershner. Well, take a look at Rian Johnson's response.

While Rian Johnson doesn't outright confirm that he was inspired by Kershner's words and incorporated them into the film, it does seem quite possible. Rian Johnson says the book was given to him while in production, so even though the script was already done, it would have been no great difficulty to incorporate this dialogue, especially if the Crait scenes weren't filmed yet. If this book about The Empire Strikes Back really did inspire Rian Johnson, it is easy to see why. Kershner's sentiment is poignant and really speaks to what separates good from evil in these stories; not just the actions characters take, but the emotions that drive them. It would also be a nice way to pay homage to the man who directed what many still consider to be the best Star Wars film.

The isn't the first time that Rian Johnson has shown how deep down the Star Wars rabbit hole he has traveled. He previously spoke about how one line of Han Solo dialogue in A New Hope inspired Admiral Holdo's kamikaze jump to hyperspace and how he even looked to the prequels and Anakin Skywalker to inform the story of Ben Solo. Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on Blu-ray March 27, at which point I'm sure we'll be scouring through the film, bonus features and deleted scenes for more interesting connections like this one. One Side Of Cable Josh Brolin Is Very Excited To Explore In Future Movies

While Ryan Reynolds is a joke machine in Deadpool 2, constantly riffing and commenting about everything, Josh Brolin's Cable is set up as his total opposite. A soldier from an apocalyptic future, he has a resolute mission to kill the child who grows up to kill his family, and that doesn't leave him a ton of time for playful banter. That being said, Brolin certainly sees the movie as a stepping stone in that direction, as he's very excited to play more with that lighter tone in future films. He recently told me,

You have this personal kind of need, or I do, because [Ryan Reynolds and I] have so much fun together, and we love this kind of irreverence that goes back and forth, and this kind of nemesis feel on social media, or whatever it is. You want to explore it more. Hopefully in X-Force. Once you get to the end of Deadpool 2 you start to see more of that Nick Nolte/Eddie Murphy volley, and I want to explore that more, because I have more fun doing that then just being serious.

I sat down with Josh Brolin earlier this week during the Deadpool 2 junket in New York, and it was in response to my very first question that he revealed his hopes for the future of Cable. I had asked if it was a particular challenge playing such a stoic individual while working opposite Ryan Reynolds' Merc With The Mouth, and he not only told me that it was, but that also that he's hoping it evolves into something different and super fun going forward. It's not exactly a spoiler for the new movie, given the long history between Deadpool and Cable in the pages of Marvel Comics, but sets up exciting ideas for the future.

Referencing the relationship between Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte's characters in the 1980s hit 48 Hrs., Josh Brolin hits on the kind of buddy cop relationship that has long existed between Cable and Deadpool for decades, and it's exciting that he wants to develop more of that. Of course, Cable is certainly the more serious of the two, making Brolin the Nolte to Reynolds' Murphy, but Nolte still has plenty of laugh-out-loud one-liners and moments in the Walter Hill action classic. Furthermore, the precedent goes beyond just that movie, as Danny Glover and Robert DeNiro are both legendary and hilarious in Lethal Weapon and Midnight Run, respectively.

On that note, it should be recognized that Josh Brolin knows that Cable is definitely not the jokester that Deadpool is, and that his characterization in Deadpool 2 is reflective of who the mutant hero is in the comics. The actor followed his comments above with that acknowledgment, referencing an interaction with a person at the film's world premiere the previous night:

Somebody said last night, 'That's the guy, though!' And I know there's a guy who is fanatical about Cable and followed all his trajectories and his histories and all that kind of stuff. And he was like, 'That's who the guy was. So you did justice to who the guy was.' And that's always nice to hear, because you never quite know.
