Parks And Rec's Ben Schwartz Wants To Play A DC Hero, And It's The Perfect Choice

In recent years, we have seen the superhero genre evolve to include some deep-cut characters. Iron Man's release showed that heroes didn't need to be household names to make serious money, and Suicide Squad showed that C-list villains could intermingle in the DCEU. With all of that in mind, it looks like Parks and Recreation actor Ben Schwartz is now campaigning to get Plastic Man brought to the silver screen DC world, and he wants the role. The actor tweeted:

There's a strong case to be made that someone like Ben Schwartz could do some solid work as Patrick "Eel" O'Brian, a.k.a Plastic Man. Ever since the character's first appearance back in the 1940s, his adventures in DC Comics have largely been defined by a wisecracking, offbeat sense of humor. Similarly, Ben Schwartz has made a name for himself with strong comedic performances on Parks and Recreation and DuckTales, so he arguably would make for a solid fit in this particular role. Per the actor's social post, it looks like he's ready to do anything to get the part.

Honestly, we're fairly on board with this idea too. After all, who wouldn't want to see Plastic Man singing in a solo movie of his very own?

As his name would seemingly suggest, Plastic Man is an extremely malleable individual with the ability to stretch, contort and move his body in insane ways. He has appeared in a large number of classic storylines and properties, like Flashpoint, Injustice _and _Young Justice, but he has never actually shown up in a live-action film; perhaps it's time for that to change. After all, if Ben Schwartz gets cast as Plastic Man, he could always call up his former Parks and Recreation co-star Chris Pratt to ask for advice about stepping into this type of world.

It's also worth mentioning the fact that this seems like an avenue that DC films are increasingly willing to explore. Justice League and Wonder Woman both featured considerably more lighthearted moments than movies like Man of Steel or Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and some evidence has suggested that this will continue with the upcoming release of David F. Sandberg's Shazam! With the DCEU showing more love to the more bizarre and fun elements of the overarching DC lore, there's ample room for someone like Ben Schwartz to step in and take on a role like Plastic Man.

Only time will tell if Ben Schwartz will ever get a chance to play Plastic Man in a DC movie. Until we learn more about the upcoming DC slate of films, make sure to mark down the December 21 release of Aquaman on your calendars and stay tuned for more DCEU updates!

One Big Question Ant-Man 3 Needs To Answer

Warning: SPOILERS for Ant-Man and the Wasp are ahead!

Ant-Man isn't always one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's (literally) biggest characters, but in the last three years, he's definitely become an important one. Scott Lang's origin story unfolded back in 2015, and less than a year later, he aided Steve Rogers and the other anti-Sokovia Accords heroes in Captain America: Civil War. Now Scott is back on the big screen for Ant-Man and the Wasp, where he finally teamed up with a costumed Hope van Dyne out in the field and faced off against the likes of Ghost and Sonny Burch. Marvel's post-2019 film slates shrouded in mystery, so it remains to be seen if a third Ant-Man movie will get the green light. Nevertheless, MCU history, as well as Ant-Man and the Wasp's critical and commercial performance, suggests there's a good chance Ant-Man 3 will happen. Working off that assumption, there's an important question that the threequel needs to answer for audiences: what happened to Mitchell Carson and the stolen Pym Particles?

For those of you who need a refresher, Mitchell Carson is S.H.I.E.L.D.'s former Head of Defense who carried a grudge against Hank Pam dating all the way back to the late 1980s, frustrated that the scientist wouldn't share how to create Pym Particles. Oh, and because Hank slammed his head into a table when he made an insulting comment about Janet van Dyne's death. Decades later, when S.H.I.E.L.D. collapsed due to the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Carson was outed as a longtime member of HYDRA, and after helping "take down governments," he resurfaced in Hank's life when Darren Cross revealed the Yellowjacket suit. Cross accepted Carson's purchase offer for the technology, and Carson showed up later inAnt-Man with some of his HYDRA buddies to make the transaction. Thanks to Scott Lang, Hope van Dyne and the Antourage, the sale didn't go through as planned, and while Cross later died fighting the new Ant-Man, Carson managed to steal the briefcase containing Cross' version of the Pym Particles (getting bitten by some ants in the process) and escape the Pym Technologies building before it exploded.

You'd think that such a plot thread would be addressed in Ant-Man and the Wasp, but not only does Mitchell Carson not show up in the sequel, the stolen Pym Particles aren't mentioned at all. Approximately a year passes between Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War, and Ant-Man and the Wasp makes it clear that about two years have passed since Scott Lang participated in the Leipzig airport battle, so let's just say it's been three years since the first Ant-Man movie when the sequel begins, just like the wait was in real life. What's Mitchell Carson been doing during this time? Did Scott, Hank Pym and Hope van Dyne make any effort to find him? Are they even aware that Carson stole Cross' Pym particles? There are all these lingering questions, but Ant-Man and the Wasp doesn't come anywhere close to providing any clues. Though part of me wonders if Sonny Burch was working for Carson, and that's who was giving Sonny orders over the phone.

In the grand scheme of things, Mitchell Carson not being addressed in Ant-Man and the Wasp isn't a big deal, as the sequel has more than enough on its plate, from exploring the Quantum Realm to Scott and Hope's rapport in the field to Ghost trying desperately to fix her condition. Both Ant-Man and Wasp are returning next year for Avengers 4, with Scott Lang looking like he'll play a particularly important role (once he's escaped the Quantum Realm, that is), but with everything that beast of a superhero blockbuster has to juggle, the soonest we could get an answer about what happened to Carson is in Ant-Man 3. And make no mistake, we do need an answer about him. For the sake of argument, let's assume that Ant-Man 3 will be the last MCU Ant-Man movie ever. If that's our last opportunity to explore that corner of this world, then Carson needs to be brought back so that story arc can be resolved.

Even with HYDRA being seemingly gone for good (as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has indicated), no doubt Mitchell Carson has plenty of other criminal connections around the world, so it would be easy enough to include him in Ant-Man 3, even though it's unlikely he'd be the main antagonist. Perhaps he's been trying for years to replicate/reverse-engineer Darren Cross' Pym Particles, but has had little luck, echoing his efforts with Hank Pym's creation in the '80s. Maybe the main antagonist, whoever it may be, gets ahold of Darren Cross' research either through a partnership or theft, subsequently using it and whatever technology they have at their disposal for nefarious purposes. Whatever Ant-Man 3's story ends up being, the creative minds behind it would be wise to include Carson in some capacity so we can finally have some resolution with him.

Sometimes, missing the boat on a franchise like The Matrix turns out to be a painful decision to have made. However, in the case of Jet Li turning down a crucial role in both The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, it was a clean and easy decision. His refusal to participate in those films was boiled down to the following rationale:

It was a commercial struggle for me. I realized the Americans wanted me to film for three months but be with the crew for nine. And for six months, they wanted to record and copy all my moves into a digital library. By the end of the recording, the right to these moves would go to them.

While taking the role of Seraph, the guardian and companion to The Matrix universe's Oracle, could have set Li up for life; there was that one catch that made him uneasy. No one can blame him for turning it down either, as any martial artist, or even any actor, will tell you, their signature characteristics are what keep them in the business. So, for the sake of Jet Li's livelihood, as well as his unique moves, it was the choice that he felt had to be made, with the role eventually going to actor Colin Chou.

Apparently, according to Abacus News, this recent discussion isn't the only time that Jet Li has voiced concerns about technology overtaking the film industry. In fact, previous remarks have basically shown that Li had the right to fear that, one day, if the studios really wanted to, they could make it look like any other actor was performing moves only Li was known for.

Despite turning down what became the monolithic Matrix franchise, Jet Li went on to do pretty well for himself. Not only did he use that time he would have spent kicking Agent Smith's ass to fight for the glory of China in Hero, he also went on to be part of the wildly successful Expendables trilogy. As if that wasn't enough, Li is about to become part of the Disney family, as he'll be playing the Emperor of China in the live-action remake of Mulan.

While actors turning down big roles in The Matrix trilogy has given us some pretty massive "what if" scenarios in the past, there's no question that Jet Li has done rather well for himself, and hasn't looked back. Though, now, there's an entire alternate universe version of The Matrix trilogy that sees Will Smith, Val Kilmer, and Jet Li fighting a whole bunch of machines; and we can't help but think about how interesting that version could have been.
