There's A Good Reason Why Colin Trevorrow Refuses To Talk About Star Wars: Episode 9

With Solo: A Star Wars Story now in the world, Lucasfilm begins to gear up for Episode IX and while we can expect to hear a lot about the movie for the next year and a half, don't expect to hear much from the film's former director. Jurassic World 's Colin Trevorrow was originally tapped to direct the final installment of the new Star Wars trilogy, but several months ago it was announced that Trevorrow was leaving the project due to having a different vision for the film than Lucasfilm. While we've heard various unsubstantiated reports about why the change may have been made, the director himself has said little about it. Colin Trevorrow is still not saying much about the split, but he has opened up about why he's not talking. He says that his silence is designed to keep the focus of the fans on the film itself, and not on the production of it, because that would destroy the magic. According to Trevorrow...

I don't want to talk too much about it because I don't want to affect the way that fans get to see these films. When we were kids, these movies came to us from far away. They were a gift. And the more we talk about how they're made, the more it reveals that they're just movies. But they're not just movies, they're more than that.

For a lot of people the Star Wars franchise is very special. They saw the original trilogy or maybe the prequel trilogy as young movie fans and fell in love with it. Colin Trevorrow certainly counts himself among that number and he understands that there's a younger generation who is experiencing the current Star Wars movies in the same way that he saw the original three. He's afraid that talking too much about the behind the scenes stuff has the potential to make Star Wars feel like any other movie and he's doesn't believe they are.

The fact that Colin Trevorrow speaks so much like a fan shows that his exit from Star Wars Episode IX hasn't tarnished his opinion of the franchise as a whole. Quite the opposite, he tells Empire that he still holds his experience working on the film in very high regard.

Beyond that, I got the opportunity to tell a story that is a celebration of everything I believe in, I got to tell it to George Lucas and I got to tell it to Luke Skywalker, and those are experiences I will cherish for the rest of my life.

J.J. Abrams eventually agreed to come in and direct as well as co-write Star Wars Episode IX. The trilogy is set to conclude in December 2019.

What Scenes Dexter Fletcher Added To Bohemian Rhapsody After Bryan Singer Left

The journey to the screen was a long and arduous road for the recent Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. That didn't cease when the film finally went into production. As the film faced some behind the scenes turmoil after Bryan Singer was fired from the project, Eddie the Eagle director Dexter Fletcher was brought in to finish production and, as is always the case, many are curious just what parts of the finished product are the work of which director. According to Joe Mazzello, who plays Queen bassist John Deacon in the film, While Fletcher came in at the end of the process of filming, most of his work can be found earlier in the movie. A lot of the scenes he did were some of the playful fun scenes near the beginning of the film and so it was really good. Everyone played to their strengths.

Joe Mazzello says that, while losing Bryan Singer as director was "weird," the cast worked with it as best they good. He also sings the praises of Dexter Flecher, saying that the new director had boundless energy, which rubbed off on the cast and made them excited to come to set.

It sounds, based on what Joe Mazzello says to EW, that Dexter Fletcher's energy was used to infuse the film itself, as some of the film's early playfulness was thanks to him. He doesn't go into specifics about what scenes he's talking about, but there is certainly a lot of early fun in Bohemian Rhapsody. From the moment that Freddie Mercury joins the bad Smile, there's a bit of silliness as the lead singer has trouble with a mic stand and then forgets the words to a song, forcing him to improv the entire thing.

Pretty much every time we see the band interacting with each other as they become superstars, it's fun. The interaction with a record executive played by Mike Myers, the retreat that resulted in the recording of the iconic A Night at the Opera album, there's fun in all of it and it sounds like the second director may have been part of the reason.

It has to be difficult when a position as big as the director changes during production. While it's not unheard of, it is a rare occurrence. While the majority of the filming of Bohemian Rhapsody had been completed, there were reportedly about two weeks left in principal photography, plus whatever reshoots were required later on. While the change could have been a serious problem, it seems like everything worked out about ass well as one could hope.

While Dexter Fletcher may have been responsible for some of the movie's most fun moments, his work was not enough to result in a credit on Bohemian Rhapsody, Bryan Singer is the only credited director on the final film.

How Much Alita: Battle Angel Has Already Made Overseas

At present, box office prognostications for Alita: Battle Angel don't look fantastic. Early estimates have suggested it won't do big business in its opening weekend, and while its Rotten Tomatoes score has been rising since the embargo first lifted, it's still getting a mostly middling response. We won't fully know how things will turn out until Sunday morning, but at the very least the film is padding its numbers with a fast start internationally.

While Alita: Battle Angel isn't out in American theaters yet, is has been given an early release over in Asia, where it has already made $32 million - according to Box Office Mojo. Fox hoped that it would get a boost in the region thanks to A) the origins of the source material, and B) the recent Chinese New Year holiday, and while the movie won't actually be out in China until later this month, it's already picked up a nice chunk of change. The movie is now out in 11 markets in Asia, and it's been particularly successful in Korea.

It's been suggested that Alita: Battle Angel might end up making less than $25 million during its five-day Valentine's Day weekend release domestically, and that would certainly be a disappointment for the feature. Not only has it been in the works for nearly 20 years, but it's been finished with principal photography since early 2017. It's been estimated that the budget is somewhere in the $150-200 million range, and a soft opening in America would be a serious blemish. Fortunately, an impressive overseas showing may prevent it from being regarded in hindsight as a flop.

It's true that $32 million might not seem like much in the grand scheme, but it's possible that Alita: Battle Angel will wind up making some seriously big numbers in foreign markets. James Cameron, who wrote and produced the film, has a huge following in China, with both Avatar ($204.1 million) and Titanic ($43.9 million) being massive successes during their theatrical releases, and there is a history of splashy action movies doing better abroad than at home. This could easily be one of those cases.

Based on Yukito Kishiro's manga series, Gunnm, and directed by Robert Rodriguez, Alita: Battle Angel is set in the year 2563 in a post-apocalyptic society - specifically a metropolis called Iron City. The story begins as a scientist named Dr. Dyson Ido (Christoph Waltz) discovers the body of a cyborg in a junk heap while searching for scraps for his work. Ido is successfully able to bring her back to life, naming her Alita (Rosa Salazar), and she not only begins to adjust to her new life, but slowly starts to remember who she was before her resurrection.
