Captain Marvel Producer Confirms An Important Character Appearance
We've already spent some time with the Kree in the Marvel Cinematic Universe through Guardians of the Galaxy and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but this spring, Captain Marvel will mark the deepest exploration yet of the alien species. Through circumstances that haven't been fully revealed, Carol Danvers was brought to the Kree home world, Hala, and having lost her memories of being a human on Earth, she's now fighting for the Kree empire on the Starforce military team. Plenty of Kree characters have been announced to appear in Captain Marvel, and now we can add another to the list: it's finally been confirmed that Yon-Rogg will indeed show up in the movie. As producer Jonathan Schwartz said:
Yon-Rogg does pop up, yeah. He's an important part of the mythology.
Yon-Rogg's presence in Captain Marvel was among the many things revealed during a set visit that CinemaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg and other reporters attended last year. The character was first rumored to appear in Captain Marvel in late 2017, although back then it was speculated that Ben Mendelsohn would play him, and now we know he's actually playing Skrull leader Talos. But the Yon-Rogg talk has picked up steam over the last few months, as there's been conflicting reports about if that's the character Jude Law is playing.
It should be noted that while Jonahan Schwartz did confirm that Yon-Rogg is in Captain Marvel, he didn't say that this is Jude Law's role. When it was first reported that Law was being looked at for Captain Marvel, it was said he'd be playing Mar-Vell, the first Captain Marvel from Marvel Comics' continuity and Carol Danvers' mentor. That was later confirmed on the Disney website, although that information was subsequently deleted. Conversely, leaked toy images have labeled Law's character as Yon-Rogg, but Marvel is staying completely quiet on this matter.
For those of you unfamiliar with Yon-Rogg, in the comics, he is a Kree military commander who became jealous of his subordinate, Mar-Vell, when the woman he loved, Una, became enamored with Mar-Vell instead. Yon-Rogg subsequently abandoned Mar-Vell on Earth and tried to have him killed, which kicked off their antagonistic relationship. Yon-Rogg was also indirectly responsible for the accident that gave Carol Danvers her powers. So like Jonathan Schwartz noted, he's an important part of the Ms. Marvel/Captain Marvel mythology, hence why it was so plausible he could show up in her movie.
Here's what we know for a fact about Jude Law's character in Captain Marvel: he's the Starforce commander and Carol Danvers' mentor, training her how how to master her incredible powers. He is also "driven by a belief in the divine leadership of the Kree people," which certainly sounds like Yon-Rogg. However, it's still possible that Yon-Rogg is being played by someone else, and Jonathan Schwart saying he'll "pop up" could suggest that he won't be a major player in the story. Even with two months to go until Captain Marvel's release, it's still difficult to figure out what's going on here.
